The point of the Clover Connect program each Wednesday morning at 8am is for Senior School Somerset College students to read to Year 3 Clover Hill State School Students. During the program we get to interact with students and help them increase their learning. The best part is the warm fuzzy feeling you get when you help someone else become a better reader. In addition, there are also lots of fun moments when Somerset and Clover Hill students share stories and interact as they read together.

I remember one particular moment with a student named Peter (name changed for confidentiality). Peter was struggling to read and pronounce the word ‘accidently’. To help Peter pronounce the word correctly, I sounded out each syllable. I then pointed to each letter individually. Remarkably, Peter then pronounced the word correctly. Peter was excited and gave me a high five! I also felt proud that I had helped him learn a new word. It is moments like this that make the Clover Connect Ready Reader Program so worthwhile.

I would like to thank Mr Oman and Clover Hill State School for giving us the opportunity to partake in this exciting experience. I encourage all Year 10 students to engage with this Service opportunity in Semester 2.

The Clover Connect program takes a break now during the examination period and will resume in Week 7.
