Recently, more than 100 Somerset College students in Years 4 to 12 were involved in the annual Gold Coast MLTAQ Languages Speech Competition at Griffith University. Well over 1000 students competed in divisions for six of the different languages that are taught on the Gold Coast, making it the largest event of its kind in the country.
Our students were required to write and present a speech to a panel of judges, which included native speakers as well as teachers and other fluent speakers of Japanese, German, Italian and French. At the conclusion of their presentation, students were then required to answer two to three questions in the target language.
The competition is always very fierce, but all of our students performed extremely well and represented the College in an exemplary manner. Prizewinners were awarded with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at a ceremony immediately following the contest. This year, our students were successful in receiving 19 medals (10 Gold, four Silver and five Bronze), one Fourth Place certificate and 19 Highly Commended certificates.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the contest! Thank you also to the language staff for the time and effort that they devoted to preparing our students for the event.
