Four Somerset students recently travelled to Cairns to represent the South Coast region in the Schools State Golf Championships. There was a strong contingent from the Hammett family with Justin (Boys 13 to 19), Sarah (Girls 13 to 19) and David (combined 10 to 12) together with Flynn Carter (combined 10 to 12).
The South Coast teams had a clean sweep of all the team events winning the Boys 13 to 19 years, Girls 13 to 19 years event and the combined 10 to 12 years event.
In addition to that, Sarah had a great week - winning the individual girls’ title to become the Queensland Schools Golf State Champion 13 to 19 years. On the par 73 course she had rounds of 74, 75, 70 and 76 (with the 3 under par round of 70 being the women’s course record). Sarah started the final round 3 shots ahead of second place. In very challenging conditions with wind and torrential rain for the first 6 holes of the final round the leading girls both dropped shots early in the round but then made several birdies over the back 9. In the end Sarah won the championship by two shots.
David had a very solid week and had the equal best score of the day for his final round moving him into seventh place in the boys 10 to 12 years which resulted in his selection in the 10 to 12 years old Queensland Schools State team.
Justin unfortunately had to withdraw part way through his second round as the back injury that has kept him out of sport for the last few months flared up again making it impossible for him to continue.
Flynn Carter had a good week too. He came fourth in the boys 10 to 12 years and also got selected for the state team for the 10 to 12 years. Congratulations to all these golfers who represented South Coast and Somerset so well - best of luck for the State team at Nationals!
