On August 4, our Junior School Sustainable Spartans rolled up their sleeves to celebrate National Tree Day, planting an impressive 250 trees at Wyangan Creek. This marks another step in the ongoing restoration efforts at this valuable part of our school.
The day's activity was led by the committed trio of ambassadors, Hannah Sun, Audrey Fraser, and Evie Cardone. They rallied a group of around 30 Sustainable Spartans and support crew to tackle the task, proving that many hands make light - and enjoyable - work.
It was a hands-on learning experience, with everyone digging in and getting a little dirt on their jeans in the process. But beyond the fun and positive energy, the event also served as a lesson in the importance of trees to our ecosystem.
As is the message of National Tree Day, every tree planted is a step towards a greener future, and our Sustainable Spartans have certainly taken us a few strides forward.
Students from Years 7 to 12 slept rough at school this term as part of the Homeless Sleepout to raise funds. Before a night in the cold, the students spent the evening serving meals with local charity Walk with Us in Burleigh.
The group's fundraising efforts of almost $9000 will to towards the purchase of Backpack Beds and Fire Retardant Polar Fleece Sleeping Bags for those experiencing homelessness or who are without shelter across the Gold Coast and interstate.
By way of reflection, students ended the evening by writing a letter to a Backpack Bed recipient.
Happy Library and Information Week! This year’s theme, Where’s the Source, highlights that now, more than ever, it is important to check credibility, authority and meaning of sources.
With the advent of generative AI, the notion of sources has become a hot topic as the large language models that sit behind these AI tools become sources in their own right. Getting back to some basic questioning is at the core of increasing critical literacy skills and forms part of the essential toolbox needed for understanding all kinds of information sources. Questions such as - Where does the information come from? When was it created? Who paid for it? In addition to being able to recognise misinformation and disinformation it is also imperative for our students to now understand who is being represented in the data and who is potentially being excluded.
Libraries have always been sources of information, and providing access and guidance through the maze of information channels is one of our most basic services. Well that, and a place to play UNO!
Following the success in the AFA School Futsal Regional Titles, our Spartans participated in the Southern Queensland Champion of Champions at Nissan Arena to qualify for Stage 3.

I was lucky enough to take the very talented squad of Under 9s who provided a spectacle for all watching throughout the entire day. The team played an entertaining style of futsal, which resulted in an undefeated run through this round against some very good teams to progress through to the next.
Well done to all who competed. I am excited to see how they do against a plethora of excellent competition in the next round. You all have a lot ahead of you in the Futsal world as a group and as individuals.
A very successful day overall.
Team: Lachlan Watkins, Thomas Chudzinski, Denham Barry, Edmund Lee, Hunter Sharples, Zach Sanders, and Sam Thompson.

A tough opening fixture against the Islamic College of Brisbane would set the tempo for the day. Despite a physical and high-intensity first half, our Spartans emerged victorious, demonstrating the boy’s ability to score on the counter. Winning the remainder of their group matches, the boys faced St Andrew's in the semi-final, treating spectators to a myriad of goals.
The boy’s intent to play appealing, possession-based futsal was rewarded with a spot in the grand final. Our Spartans would go on to dominate their final fixture - capping off the day as Champion of Champions and remaining undefeated in the process.
Well done to our Spartans for their continued efforts!

After progressing from Stage 1 with both under 11 teams, we looked ahead to a great opportunity for Somerset players to be challenged by another level of opposition. Both groups competed in which they played three games each in their pools. Having taken two strong sides, the boys made it to the quarter finals, a testament to the players and programme.
Funnily enough both teams faced off together in the semi-final, like they did in 2022, when of course there could only be one winner, Somerset.
The boys came up against a very strong Peregian Beach College in which they battled well in the first 5 to 10 minutes keeping the score at a 1 to 2 goal difference, unfortunately they came on top of us and won the grand final.
All in all, I am proud of the Under 11 Boys. It was a fantastic effort again for the 2023 Stage 2 Champions of Champions. Both groups having made the semi-final will progress to Stage 3, a great achievement!
Runners Up: James Baumfield, Andrew Blatchford, Hugo Hasselle, Edward Hassett, Alex Pourre, Vaughan Furlong, Josh Thompson and Danny Wang
Semi Finals: Max Bowden, Henry Pevy, Izaak Barclay, Oliver Ng, Connor Millar-Martin, Benedict Thompson, Zhander Griffiths, Paxton Stewart and Harper Loon.

Some Under 10 and Under Girls attended the Matildas match at the Suncorp Stadium staying over in Brisbane before meeting for the competition at Nissan Arena on the Friday. It was thought the girls might be tired and sleepy after cheering for the Australian Women's National Football team but it seemed the match gave them plenty of energy!
The Under 10 Girls played three group matches and stayed undefeated in their group. This gave the team an advantage in the semi-final. The team did amazing and got qualified for the finals. In the final they started a bit nervous, but once the first goal was scored, they came out on top of the game to secure the win! Well done!
Team: Ava Meyers, Edith Hilbert, Robin Wang, Alex Lee, Chloe Li, Indi Toomey, Emma Cordner, Mayuko Takahata and Scarlett Hasselle
The Under 11 Girls ranked first in their group by winning a total of six matches! The girls showed an excellent style of playing with a great combination of plays and team goals.
Simliar to the Under 10s, by ranking first, the Under 11 Girls gave themselves also a good opportunity to reach the finals. They started well in the semi-final taking a 2-nil lead in half time.
In the second half, the physical opposition team adjusted their style of playing, and this caused us many problems. The game ended up in extra time. Unfortunately, we could score any more and the team got knocked out in the semi-final. However, the girls are qualified for next stage! Well done team.
Team: Bronte Butler, Emily Barry, Evie Ladbrook, Imogen Sounness, Arianna Reading, Luella Zerbst, Mayuko Takahata and Audrey Hilbert.
All Somerset College Futsal teams that participated in Stage 2, secured a spot at the final and last stage that is taking place at the end of the year. Well done boys and girls!
