We are excited to invite parents and caregivers to attend this year's Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship.*
Come see where innovation and inspiration converge! This dynamic event held 10 and 11 September, 2024, is designed to ignite and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit among our students.
Join our students, and be immersed in the wisdom of accomplished keynote speakers and globally renowned entrepreneurs who, through firsthand accounts of triumphs and setbacks, will give invaluable insights into the world of business.
Our budding Year 9 Entrepreneurs will again take centre stage, showcasing their business stalls and engaging with the wider College community. Meanwhile, Year 6 students will unveil their YearSixpreneur stalls, proving that age is no barrier to creativity and business acumen.
Tour our Synergies Creative Minds Exhibition held in the Design Centre, where Somerset College showcases the work of our aspiring artists, engineers and budding film makers. See what can be achieved when students use design thinking to solve problems in the modern world.
The Celebration of Entrepreneurship is not just an event, it's a gateway to knowledge, networks, and hands-on experiences that will empower students to shape their own futures.

A group of Year 10 and 11 girls, were fortunate to have been given the opportunity to attend a Women in Sports breakfast at Griffith University.
At the beginning, we were welcomed by staff and invited guests and were lucky enough to listen to a panel conference consisting of five inspiring women. We heard from Naomi McCarthy, who was the director of the Griffith sports panel, as well as Anabell McLaren and Taylah Favier, who both studied sports sciences, one in which now works with the Gold Coast Titans. Sara Wyner shared her experience in marketing and social engagement within sports, and Sam Hughes showed us an insight into her daily life of working in active and healthy alliance on the Gold Coast.
After this we were placed into groups and got to rotate around three activities. The first one primarily consisted of an active conversation between students on the ways we can increase participation in all sports for women, ensuring equal pay and inclusivity. Afterwards, we learned about the technologies used to study biomechanics in sports, with students placing trackers on their arms or legs and either doing some bowling or hoola hooping. This data was then collected, and students had to observe trends and body movement.
Lastly, we were fortunate enough to hear about the undergraduate degrees of sport sciences in a lecture theatre, and then following that we all participated in different sport tests including force plates, knee strength, reaction time , and identifying what sport would need these aspects. It was clear that all the girls came out of the day with a better understanding on what they may like to study in university, as well as how we can increase participation for women in sports throughout the community.
On behalf of all the girls, we would like to thank Mr Robinson for providing us with this opportunity, and for Liv Sina for coming along with us for the day.
Our Head of Junior School, Ms Collie joined Prep W and Pre-Prep Red this week, on an adventure to Wyangan Creek.
The Prep and Pre-Prep classes have been pairing up for weekly outdoor adventures where the Preps teach the Pre-Preps some safety rules for their nature play.
We are lucky to have some amazing outdoor spaces to explore around our beautiful College.
The Year 10 Geographers visited the Nerang River this term, to learn all about the river course and its features.
Alongside Ms Phillips and Mr Evans, we made our way to Natural Bridge and followed the river downstream to Bochow Park, Hinze Dam, Latimer’s Crossing and Nerang. Our main focus was to gather data and experience the curriculum in a real-life setting to assist us with writing our field report.
We measured things like the velocity of the stream, the type and size of rocks in the pools and ripples, the gradient of the river and the width and wetted perimeter of the river. Not only were we able to learn lots more about our unit of study on river systems and human impacts by visually consolidating the content we have learnt, we also got to experience this day with our peers in a fun and supportive environment. It was especially helpful as throughout the day we got to collaborate with our classmates to collate and record data, strengthening both our relationships with our peers and our understanding of our current unit of study in a way which seemed like a fun day out with friends.
We think we can all agree it was worth getting our feet wet in the river for a delicious ice cream and lunch at the Hinze Cafe afterwards! This excursion has definitely been the highlight of Year 10 Geography, and we cannot wait to continue this subject into Years 11 and 12.
