Our Year 12 QCE Drama students completed their last internal Drama assessment in Week 5. Focusing on Greek Tragedy, the students were tasked to transform the inherited text of Medea, written by Euripides, manipulating Contemporary conventions with the goal of reshaping the dramatic meaning and context, to capture the attention of a modern audience. The students' work demonstrated sophisticated manipulation of convention and was executed with acting skill. We also got to view Medea through the eyes of our IB Diploma Theatre student, Noah Jay, as he shared his progress on his upcoming research project: The role of ritualistic movement within a Greek chorus.
Studying Senior Drama offers students the ability to hone their craft and discover their identity as an artist. Throughout Units 1 to 4 students develop their ability to perform, design, direct and devise. Furthermore, the Senior Drama Syllabus is structured around the development of 21st Century Skills. Identified by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority as skills and attributes students need to prepare them for higher education, work and engagement in a complex and rapidly changing world. Senior Drama students are critical and creative thinkers who develop the confidence to communicate their ideas within collaborations, then transfer these ideas onto the stage. They work to develop personal and social skills and explore an innovative use of ICT throughout their creative process.
Congratulations Year 12 Drama students! We take pride in knowing the skill set you have developed over the course of your studies will allow you to continually achieve personal success.
Year 7 have enjoyed some very special events this week. On Wednesday we had an inter-house competition of Capture the Flag. This was run by our Year 7 Captains and their band of Year 12 helpers. Congratulations to Veivers for their victory! Thank you, Year 12s!
On Thursday was the annual Year 7 Pizza Day. We had 73 pizzas consumed in a matter of minutes by the hungry 7s.
Friday morning saw 139 Egyptians arrive in our Year 7 area. Mrs Carrie Smith’s Egyptian celebration is always a lot of fun and a 'hands on' way to learn about the Egyptian culture.
Thank you, Mrs Smith and Year 7 teachers!
The KIP looked more like the showbag hall at the Ekka than a library this week as we held our annual Scholastic Book Fair, which turned out to be the biggest one yet.
There were frenzied scenes as our students indulged their love of books, diaries, arts and crafts and of course, cool stationery. At the time of writing, our Book Fair sales are at a record high.
Thank you so much to all the wonderfully supportive Somerset College parents that allowed their children to purchase at the Book Fair. It is through your generosity that we will not only be able to donate $2,500 to the Room to Read organisation, but also able to purchase many new Scholastic books to continue to grow our Junior collection in the KIP.
The winner of the Sports Precinct's Fitness Member of the Month is, Thomas Dawson!
Tom started coming to the gym regularly last year and has been consistent and exudes self-discipline. His results have been amazing and a credit to his hard work.
He is the perfect gym member, who always abides by the rules. Tom is extremely courteous and polite to other gym members. He leads by example, making him a great role model for fellow students and an asset to the overall gym community.

Under 7 Girls
The U7 girls played Pacific Pines Silver at home in an intense game with no score for the first half. The Spartan girls did get a few good shots; however, Pacific Pines held their defence. In the second half our girls' teamwork improved and under instruction from Coach Mark. It did not take long until the opposition's defence line was broken and Ava scored the first goal. The game finished with goals from, Ava (two), Annie (two) and Gabbi (one). Also, great passes and defending from Isabella and Robin. Player of the Week went to Gabbi for her consistent effort and fantastic teamwork.
The following round, the side met Pacific Pines Pink. From the start, they attacked nonstop taking our team to an early and constant lead. Ava and Annie scored, getting the ball out of sticky situations. Edie and Robin were persistent and unyielding, chasing the ball to stop goals,
What a great game! Player of the Match - Edith Hilbert
Under 6
Somerset Under 6 played a nail-biting match against Robina Gold. Olly and Aksel managed to successfully defend the opposition and get the ball away. Scarlett scored the first goal of the match. Zara kicked well from the sideline, Ollie displayed some very fancy footwork, the other team scored and then the whistle signalled half time with a score of 1-all. A superb kick from Ollie, passing to Scarlett who tapped the ball in the goal! Aksel followed with another goal taking the final score 4 to 2!
The brilliant teamwork resulted in all players being jointly named Player of the Week. A special thanks to Cooper and Mark for coaching!
Under 6s followed the next round against Nerang, attacking and working together helping Aksel score three goals in the first half. Zara and Hannah put the pressure on and kept our defence up with some tricky ball moves working as a strong team together. Nerang couldn’t stop Scarlett kicking three amazing goals in the second, taking the win 6 to 1.
In the most recent round, Somerset versed Robina in an exciting clash to watch. Somerset came out firing in the second half with Aksel quickly scoring the first goal of the match. Robina replied with two goals in succession but Somerset never gave up. Ollie was formidable in defence, Hannah had some strong kick offs and Scarlett worked hard dribbling the ball down the wing helping Aksel, in his strong attack, to kick another goal to even the score. Zara showed lots of courage tackling and winning the ball and James slotted into the team well as a player key in the mid field.
Some excellent defending along with Aksel’s goal scoring magic and Somerset managed to score again. Another win to the Under 6s, 3 to 2.
Now gather around young Spartans, there’s a story to be told,
Of an Olympian in the making, and his quest for Green and Gold.
And a very valuable message, a lesson we should all take,
To never give up on your dreams, no matter what’s at stake.
So, listen very carefully, and keep those thoughts in check,
As I share with you the story of Alexander Beck.
From the fields of Wyangan, at a very young age,
To the Olympics in Tokyo, on the world’s biggest stage.
And in doing so became a member, of an illustrious group,
Our history will tell you, they’re a very fine troupe.
Carrigan, Lindores, and Fargus counts too,
(even though it was Great Britain for whom she swam through.)
They all carried our flag, the best of the best,
To the Olympic Rings, from our Somerset Crest.
If the definition of perseverance, is to achieve and overcome,
It’s Alex Beck in the 400m, who showed how it’s done.
To run his own race, and forget about the rest,
With a time of 45.54 – a personal best.
So, thank you Alex Beck, class of 2009
For aspiring to excellence at the age of 29.
A reminder to us all, that dreams can come true.
And no matter the struggle, keep surging like you.
When the light at the tunnel, doesn’t seem all that bright
Keep showing up, soldier on, keep fighting the fight.
So, there you go young Spartans, be the best you can be.
And never lose sight, of the dream you can see.
Because if it’s taking a while, just stop for a sec,
And think for a minute, of the great Alex Beck.
