Somerset College raised more than $3,000 celebrating Loud Shirt Day in vibrant style, on Friday 18 October.
The Junior School contributed an impressive $3,505.75 to Hear and Say, an organisation dedicated to supporting children with hearing loss. The day was filled with colour, energy, and a powerful sense of community as students donned their brightest shirts to raise awareness for this important cause.
At the Junior School assembly, a novelty cheque was proudly presented, marking the success of the fundraising efforts. The event highlighted the impact that Hear and Say has on children, including students like Violet, a Pre-Prep student at Somerset College born with hearing loss due to microtia and atresia. Thanks to the support from Hear and Say, Violet and other children like her are able to access crucial resources and therapies for their speech, language, and social development.
Thank you to all who contributed to making Loud Shirt Day a resounding success! Together, we are making a difference in the lives of children with hearing loss.
Our year 8 students Emma Mollard, Matilda Thompson and Evie Wilson were finalists in the prestigious Mayor's Technology and Innovation Awards (MTIA) held at Bond University on Thursday 3 October.
The event, run by Experience Gold Coast together with Bond University, City of Gold Coast and Cohort Innovation space brought together young innovators who focused on key community needs in the areas of Place, Prosperity and People.
Students were supported by Mr Smith, Mr U'ren and Ms Thomson, to present their idea SafetyAIr; using drones with cameras to survey council owned footpaths to identify cracks and trip hazards in pathways and feedback to City council to get them attended to.
The group presented their five minute pitch on the night to a jury and walked away with the Peoples Choice Award. As a result of this they have now been invited to the Bond University demo day to present this idea to entrepreneurs who may be able to develop their ideas further.
Two Senior students are now Gold Level Holders after achieving their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Congratulations Alysha Gahankari and Leo Kelly Correa for your achievements.
The Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers (QAMT) University of Queensland (UQ) Year 7 and 8 Mathematics Quiz is an opportunity for students in Years 7 and 8 to compete in a series of Mathematical quiz rounds across Queensland.
Congratulations to the following Year 7 and 8 students who competed in the Round 1 of the Quiz.
The Round 1 Winning team was Arjun Rai, Ethan Hu and Jamie Lewis (Year 7) and the runners up were Rinzenn Bansal, Isabel Bantick and Evan Li (Year 7).
Round 2 was hosted by Somerset in Week Two, Term Four and the result would determine the top team in Southeast Queensland. The top two teams from Round 1 competed and the competition was fierce. There were the usual five rounds; Estimation, Speed, Problem Solving, Individual Questions and General Knowledge. It was wonderful to see the students laughing, smiling and enjoying themselves, whilst at the same time completing some rather challenging and creative maths.
A special thank you to Mrs Bronwyn Wright, co-ordinator of the Somerset Mathematical Society, for her outstanding organisation and expert coaching.
Congratulations to the winning team of Arjun Rai, Ethan Hu and Jamie Lewis.
We are looking forward to following their progress in the state finals on 31 October.
On a sunny afternoon in Week 4 Somerset College’s Year 4 Band took to the stage in The Craig Bassingthwaighte Centre Concourse, blowing the audience away.
From flutes to trumpets, percussion and clairnets, our young musicians showed their impressive progress after under a year of lessons.
Classes 4D and 4G kicked things off with impressive enthusiasm, with both classes joining for the opening before breaking away to flute, trumpet, clarinet and perscussion solos and duets.
Then came 4P and 4M who delivered an equally joyful display of musicianship.
Well done, Year 4, and congratulations to our dedicated peripatetic instrumentalists for preparing the group so brilliantly for their performance.
