There was huge excitement on October 25 at 7.45am as Year 3 Students departed from Sara Carrigan Court for camp. We headed to Tyalgum Ridge Retreat which took us an hour and thirty minutes to get there. Our stay would be for three days and two nights with eight activities to complete during this time.
We arrived at 10.30am (NSW time) and we all pulled the suitcases off the bus. From there we grabbed a quite bite to eat (a piece of fruit) and burn off some energy by running around the field. We also spotted two ponies who were excited to see us! From there we went to the hall where Mr Boston introduced us to Matthew who ran the activities. He told us about Tyalgum Ridge Retreat and then handed over to Mr Boston for the moment we were all waiting for… our cabin groups! After we found out who we were staying with, we headed to our rooms with our suitcases and unpacked, ready for our first activity. Two of the best activities we did that day was the Waterfall Hike followed by the Creek Watch. The scenery was magical and made the place beautiful to explore.
On the first night after the two activities we had dinner and got ready for the Year 3 Talent Show. All of the participants were trying their best by performing dances, magic shows and poems. All students enjoyed the performance and that was definitely a night to remember!
On the second day, we started our morning by waking up at 5.00am (QLD time). We all got dressed and packed our backpack for our four activities for the day. These included the Flying Fox, Catapult, Kayaking and Farmyard visit. By the end of the day we were so tired but we still had another surprise to come! The Wildlife Twins came to show us some native animals and how these animals protect themselves in the wild. They we great speakers and the show was very entertaining. We even got to see a baby wombat! After the show we crashed into our beds and got a good night sleep before the last day.
We woke up on the last morning to a full breakfast and our last two activities before we jumped on the bus and headed home. We had the best time on camp and we can’t wait to do it again next year.
Seven groups, who were voted by their peers to represent their class, presented a two-minute slide show in The Boardroom with Headmaster, Mr Bassingthwaighte and Chief Operating Officer, Mr Thornton.
The IAS students were very excited to have the opportunity to discuss their work with our Headmaster and Finance Manager on what they identified as a problem and solution within their school environment.
The groups did Year 7 proud as they succinctly voiced their ideas for improvement for the betterment of their peers and those who enter our school grounds.
Mr Bassingthwaighte and Mr Thornton gave excellent feedback to each group and the questions they asked were answered confidently and very professionally by each of the Year 7 group members.
The students felt very proud of their efforts and could see that being proactive and voicing their concerns in a productive way may possibly lead to the change that they were hoping for.
They said they felt very ‘professional’ presenting their ideas to the College Leadership Team especially in the setting of the Boardroom!
This task was an introduction to their IDU unit which is starting in Week 7/8 this term on Entrepreneurship. They will be identifying a problem and creating a product or service to solve the issue and then pitching it to ‘prospective investors’.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Bassingthwaighte and Mr Thornton for making the time in such a busy term to listen and engage so eagerly with the Year 7 cohort.

Somerset Triathlon Academy (POGO, Jakroo) displays outstanding performance over the October 28 to 29 weekend and is crowned 2023 All Schools Triathlon Champions.
Spartan triathletes headed to Kawana this past weekend to compete at the All-Schools Regional trials. The race brought together some of the best athletes in Australia as most high performing triathletes reside in South-East QLD. The squad set foot at Lake Kawana with two main objectives, qualify as many athletes as possible to State Champs and take the overall trophy.
Our younger 10 to 11-year-old triathletes also competed at Kawana as part of their preparation for South Coast Aquathlon trials held on Monday, October 30. Kai Edgley, Imogen Sounness, and Monet De Bruin raced both Saturday and Monday races. Kai raced celebrating his birthday and gifted himself with an outstanding qualification to State Championship.
The official South Coast list has not been released yet, but we believe that among Somerset athletes and Spartan Triathlon Club members we had the following athletes qualify for State Championships to be held at Hervey Bay in February:
William Warwick – 4th South Coast
Gregg Velloza – 8th South Coast
Aspen Anderson – 1st South Coast Holly Hembling – 10th South Coast (pending South Coast qualification decision)
Emma Warwick – 7th South Coast
Lucas Soegaard – 2nd South Coast
Aaron Mcquaid – 4th South Coast
Zac Moir – 6th South Coast
River Edgley – DNS (pending South Coast qualification decision)
Elisabeth Staelen – 4th South Coast
Emma Lester – 8th South Coast
Joel Rodd – 3rd South Coast (club athlete)
Talus Manning – 6th South Coast (club athlete)
Liam Thornton – 8th South Coast
Cooper Shevlin – DNF (pending South Coast qualification decision)
Liana Warwick – 9th South Coast (pending South Coast qualification decision) 10 to 11 years
Kai Edgley – 7th South Coast
The squad will now focus on the upcoming Junior and Youth National Championships in December and the Australian Grand Prix Triathlon in January. Both races are done over the high intensity Super Sprint distance (300m swim, 8km cycle, 2km run) and are draft-legal during the cycling leg making swimming speed and cycling skills decisive for winning.
Two Somerset teams who entered made it into the top division of the Under 12 Queensland School Futsal Cup early this month.
Coach Jonno
A challenge ahead with only two players having the age of Under 12. With thanks to our Under 11 students, we were able to get a competitive team together. On Day 1, the boys came narrowly second in the group stage. On Day 2, We progressed into finals for the top division with seven other best placed schools.
The boys showed great display in the quarter finals and qualified for the semi-final. Although they lost the semi-final to a very good St Lawrence team, every player showed fantastic commitment and resilience! Moving into the third place playoff game for a third place finish, the boys started strong but unfortunately came up short, losing the game.
All players represented the school with great character on and off the field in their first time competing in this tournament.
Well done, Max Bowden, Liam Seymour, Mila Oldfield, Harper Loon, Zhander Griffiths, Connor Millar-Martin, Oliver Ng, Benedict Thompson, and Paxton Stewart.
Coach Nigel
The young Spartans played a total of three matches and stayed undefeated on Day 1. Finishing Day 1 top of their pool, qualifying for the finals in the top division. Day 2 saw the team continue to play some amazing futsal progressing to the semi-finals, losing against a strong Stretton SS. After a tight third place play-off game, the Spartans finished fourth.
This was a fantastic result by such a young team lead by Year 6 student Evie May Coates.
Well done Arianna Reading, Mayuko Takahata, Luella Zerbst, Audrey Hilbert, Bronte Butler, Robin Wang, Edith Hilbert, and Imogen Sounness.
After day one of the tournament, the schools were graded into the Cup and Shield divisions. Our Head of Football and Futsal very satisfied with both teams reaching the Cup division. With both teams having a lot of players playing a year level up. We are extremely proud of ending fourth place.
