There will also be performances by members of Wordsmiths as well as musical items.
The Exhibition will be held on Thursday 25 October 2018 in The Great Hall, commencing at 6.00pm and finishing by 9.00pm. Speeches and other presentations will take place between 7.00pm and 8.00pm, allowing time after this for guests to mingle and appreciate the artwork. (This event is Thursday, Week 3 of Term Four).
A feature of the evening will be the announcement of the ‘Somerset Senior Art Prize’, selected from work by Year 12 Visual Art students in their final year of study. There will also be gifts awarded to recognise the talents of students in the other elective classes. In addition, we welcome local painter, Seabastion Toast, to present awards and give an insight into the life of a career artist.
Every student presently electing to study Visual Art in Years 9 to 12 will have work displayed in the exhibition. There will also be a selection of works displayed by students in Years 7 and 8 Visual Arts, as well as a range of works from other Design Faculty subject areas. This is a great opportunity for members of the Somerset Community to view the creative work of our students from all years of the Senior School.
I look forward to seeing you on the night for what is sure to be an entertaining evening.
Our students were required to write and present a speech to a panel of judges, which included native speakers as well as teachers and other fluent speakers of Japanese, German, Italian and French. At the conclusion of their presentation, students were then required to answer two to three questions in the target language.
The competition is always very fierce, but all of our students performed extremely well and represented the College in an exemplary manner. Prizewinners were awarded with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at a ceremony immediately following the contest. This year, our students were successful in receiving 19 medals (10 Gold, four Silver and five Bronze), one Fourth Place certificate and 19 Highly Commended certificates.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the contest! Thank you also to the language staff for the time and effort that they devoted to preparing our students for the event.
The Reading Hour promotes that in children, reading has been shown to help with identity formation and setting them up for success in the future. But it wasn’t all about the students. In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68 per cent more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea.
The night was a complete success with parents reading to children, children reading to parents and children reading to other children. By far the favourite room was the ‘in the dark’ room where children read using torches. I also heard some amazing accents being used for different characters.
Thank you to all who helped out including the Year 6 volunteers and Bibliotheca Committee and a massive thank you to Mrs Walsh and Mrs Vanderwerff for their amazing vision and organisation. I can’t wait to see what next year brings.
Steve will be joined by a number of other entrepreneurs from the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia. For full details of guest entrepreneurs please go to the Celebration of Entrepreneurship website.
This festival will deliver a programme which supports the growth of entrepreneurial skills amongst Somerset College students. The initiative will provide students with the knowledge, networks and hands-on experience to help them launch their own enterprises both now and in the future. We are very excited about bringing this exciting opportunity to the Somerset College community again this year.
Channel Ten’s Shark Tank panellist, and current Queensland Government Chief Entrepreneur, Steve Baxter, will be launching the 2018 Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship on Monday 15 October. Steve was part of the inaugural Celebration of Entrepreneurship in 2017, and we are delighted to have him back to share his wisdom with the wider Gold Coast Community. This event is open to the wider Gold Coast Community.
16 October 6.00pm This free community event is for the whole family. The Startup Party is a night of festivities to celebrate social entrepreneurship and the wonderful ways in which not for profit organisations can give back to the community. Our Year 9 and 10 students will provide the food and drink for the event, and our Year 6 Club Kidpreneurs will be selling their products and services throughout the evening. This year our special guests include Orange Sky and Edda Hamar.
As part of the 2018 Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship, students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have the opportunity to participate in the Bond University Turbo Charged Startup Course in Entrepreneurship. During this course, students will work in groups of approximately 6 students with Australian entrepreneurs to transform a business idea into a thriving commercial entity.
At the conclusion of the course, all groups will pitch their business ideas over dinner to a Panel of guest entrepreneurs including Mark Sowerby (2017 Queensland Chief Entrepreneur), Orange Sky (2017 Queensland Young Australians of the Year) and Edda Hamar (2017 Queensland Young Entrepreneur of the Year). After the pitch, the winning groups’ business idea will be given seed capital to start the business.
Mentoring support will be provided by Blue Lens Consulting to help the winning group with this startup process. Participation in the Startup Course in Entrepreneurship is limited to 30 students.
17 October 6.00pm This will occur on the final night of the festival. It will involve students participating in the Bond University Turbo Charged Start-up Course in Entrepreneurship pitching their ideas to the community in search of start-up capital.
There will be a panel of guest judges and a keynote address by Steve Baxter from Shark Tank and River City.
If you would like to know more about the festival or provide sponsorship, please contact Dane Oman at the College.
Under the guidance of Travis, students then transitioned these ideas into the foundations of a performance, exploring the way movement can convey a sense of place without the need for set pieces, props or technical components (such as lighting and sound).
Students will continue to work on this performance piece and next term, will present their work to a select group of schools and industry professionals in Brisbane.
We wish them well!
As his friends mine his thriving social media accounts for clues, it becomes clear that things aren’t always what they seem and sometimes real life cannot be filtered out.
On Monday September 17, Shake & Stir Theatre Company performed a high energy, comedic performance to our entire Year 8 cohort. Unfiltered explored the idea that devices assist with our everyday life, can filter the negative, enhance the positive and create relationships with others, without ever needing to look up from the screen. Working with themes of individuality, peer pressure, cyberbullying and online additions, our Year 8 students were challenged to consider the consequences of their actions online.
Live theatre has the power to help students connect to relevant social issues, and encourages them to develop a sense of empathy for others.
Thank you Shake & Stir for providing this valuable experience for our students.
Inter-House Chess brings out an interesting dynamic where Somerset students, used to playing side-by-side against teams from other schools, have to do battle against each other. In the end, the Laver team – Eason Wang, Kenny Ming, Raphael Atia, Aadi Rai, Jack Walker, James Hartley and Liam Hartley – won by a comfortable margin, defeating other teams in all matches. Second was Franklin and third place went to Andrews. Final team scores (two points for a win and 1 for a tie):
The Junior Masters was held last weekend and the One Day Challenge was held on Sunday, with a total 14 Somerset students participating. Notable results in the Junior Masters: Eason Wang and Jason Li with 4.5/7 and equal sixth place. Top performers in the One Day Challenge: Calen Tang (6/9 and = seventh place), Advait Naik (5.5/9), Aadi Rai (5/9), Bobby Long (5/9) and Tamar Chester-Haviv (5/9).
Arriving at our amazing accommodation we settled in, had a team talk and were raring to go on Saturday morning.
We were in Pool K but didn’t know any of the teams and so we approached each game with quite a few nerves.
Game 1 v St Peter’s Rochedale
Our shooters Marley Burns and Ruby Partridge found their groove early on and set up a strong 18 to 6 win.
Game 2 v Springers
This game caught us napping. Sadly we didn’t seem to get the ball down to our shooters as best as we could and we finished with a 9 to 7 defeat. We knew from this result we needed to up our game.
Game 3 v Wishart School Blue
This game was always going to be a tough one as the school had already won their two previous rounds by a large margin. When we saw the size of their Goal Shooter (a six foot boy) we knew we had to pull out our big guns. An amazing first half saw us in the lead, 8 to 3. Unfortunately we lost Lili Bannerman early in the second half to a finger injury. Despite amazing leaps and rebounds by Giovanna Basile, Wishart came out the victors by 12 to 10. Wishart then went on through the competition to make it to the Semi Finals.
Game 4v St Augustine’s 2
We managed a convincing win by 31 to 0.
Game 5 v Avoca Bluebirds
We followed up with another convincing win of 22 to 1.
Despite our amazing statistics were put in Division 3. We were determined not to drop any more games.
We went back to base for a swim in a refreshing (cold!) pool, enjoyed fun and games on the lawn, pizza and an impromptu Spartans Idol show before retiring early to bed in preparation for day two.
What a start to the day we had!
Game 1 v St Benedicts
Once again Marley and Ruby read the play off each other. We saw amazing feeding into the circle by Lili (back from injury) and Rio. A solid defence from Daisy, Kinari and Giovanna led to a 13 to 3 victory.
Game 2 v Roma State
Lili moved in to take some shots and linked well with both Ruby and Marley, Daisy had a strong game at centre. With Maddi McLaughlin as the wing defence and Natalie Mai at Goal Defence we went on to another win, 15 to 2.
Game 3 v Xavier Catholic College
We were high on a winning streak during this game, despite the soaring temperatures and the increased wind (not to mention the dust) making it tough for all players. We successfully achieved another win 12 to 2.
Game 4 v St Mary’s
This game was crunch time. St Mary's were also undefeated in the division. All players were fired up. Once again Ruby and Marley were on target with their shots and a solid defence once more came from Giovanna and Kinari. We were leading at half time by two points but it was not quite enough for us to let our guard down, nor for the coach to breathe easy. With only one change going into the second half, we pulled out all stops and secured a 12 to 8 win.
Game 5, our final game and we needed a win to secure our first place. Thankfully the girls did as they were asked and played their final game of the tournament with energy and determination. Victory was ours with a 14 to 2 win.
What an amazing tournament. Then there was just the short six hour trip home.
Congratulations to all players and thank you to all the parents for their support.
We do need to recognise Alex Halloran, Nick Tan and Felix Jackson-King for competing in higher age divisions. They were outstanding in their approach to take on the opposition.
Thank you to Stephanie Oppermann for supporting the teams and to our officials, Molly Ritson and Rebecca Jackson.
See you around the track!
The goal of today was to play as a team and show great sportsmanship. The team votes on how kind and helpful the other team was. Sharni Norman was voted as the player who showed great Sportsmanship. What a great achievement!
Overall Somerset placed third which was a great achievement.
The goal of the day was the same as the red ballers. Somerset again showed some great sportsmanship. With Justin Kim taking about the award. What another great achievement. Overall Somerset finished 2nd which is a great achievement.
Special thanks must go to Mrs Burns and Mrs McLaughlin who supervised and coached the squad.
Congratulations to those students who represented the Hinterland District at the recent South Coast Athletics Trials last week at the Gold Coast Athletics Centre. The results were as followings:
For those students and parents who may be interested, Somerset College plans to participate in the TAS Under 12 Rugby Carnival in Armidale in 2019. The dates for this trip are from Friday 12 April to Sunday 14 April next year. This is the middle weekend of the Easter holidays. More information and details will be announced early in Term Four.
A group of Somerset students made it through to the Subaru Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships held in Perisher recently. This is the first for Somerset, who have named themselves, the Somerset Snowsports team. We were seconds off achieving medals in the snowboard GS and Moguls.
There were 284 schools with over 2700 competitors for the week. The Somerset Snowsports team achieved 10th position overall, which was an outstanding effort by all students. We look forward to next year's 2019 invitation.
Congratulations to Felix Jackson-King on breaking the Triple Jump record at Regionals last week.
Felix jumped 13.09m. Felix will now go onto represent the South Coast region for both Triple Jump and High Jump.
