“Feel, imagine, do and share”, our PYP Exhibition statement lead us to success. It was an experience that taught us skills to take into our next journey into the MYP. Everyone worked at their best and I was mind blown with all the interactives; each one was unique and engaging.
The visuals were detailed, showing the time the students took to work on them. Our mentor teachers were very helpful, they gave us advice and expert knowledge, helping to settle our nerves.
The Year 5 students took action by being knowledgeable ambassadors for each issue on display, speaking enthusiastically with confidence about their issue to the students of the Junior School. Teamwork was displayed at a very high standard as we worked together to make it fun, interactive and the most memorable day of the year.
Kaitenan Weintrop, 5P
PYP Exhibition was a great inquiry where Year 5 investigated issues across the whole world, not just Australia. We learnt about challenges that people and animals face such as poverty, global warming, habitat loss, malnutrition and other issues around the world.
The 2020 PYP Exhibition was a fun and interesting experience for all of us. Before the Exhibition day, we started with fun classroom learning experiences and tasks and we then chose our topics and began our research. I chose child poverty and was put in a, 'How we organize ourselves' group with Anika Dawson, Mia Graham, Patrick Geng and Grace Pan. I had page after page of research from websites and books and even interviewed an expert in dealing with poverty as my primary source. After I gathered all my information, I began displaying our research in our visuals and interactives. I made three visuals and two interactives plus the poster I worked on with my group.
Once everything was ready, the big day finally came. As my group and I stood at our learning centre, I taught the Junior School about where and why child poverty existed and shared information about the causes and impacts of child poverty. My group also taught the junior school about the impact of malnutrition and homelessness. As we were interacting with some of the junior school, so were many other groups who all worked just as hard to share what they had learned and help educate others in the Junior School. The whole of Year 5 did an exceptional job at PYP Exhibition that day.
After the PYP Exhibition, I was very proud of myself and I imagine so was everyone else. I think during the PYP Exhibition I used a number of skills - self-management, thinking, social and research skills. I was open-minded and listened to everyone’s ideas and worked well in the group. I was a thinker when creating the posters and made sure I didn’t waste too much paper! The 2020 PYP Exhibition was an experience that I will never forget and if I had the chance, would love to do again. I had lots of fun while at the same time, learned lots of new things about the world.

As I opened the booklet, I saw my camp group, cabin group and duty group written on the pages. My cabin group was myself, Katie, Grace, Ella, Amy, Maria, Riko, Maya, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Filippa. My friend Maria was in all my groups throughout camp! As we arrived at the first stop (Logan River Parklands) we ate morning tea and played on the playground, then we got back on the bus and watched the movie Shrek after that, we watched Ice Age. Then we arrived at our second stop (Caboolture Service Centre) to have lunch before again boarding the bus and heading straight to camp!
As we passed the 'Welcome to Mapleton' sign, we all started to get excited because we were only eight-minutes away from camp! As we got off the bus, we picked up our bags and off we went to our cabins! Our cabin (L1) was the biggest cabin in the camp (we even had a lounge room!). Our room was so big that we could not resist playing around. My first activity was archery. I didn’t hit the target but I hit a swinging milk bottle which I think I could put down as achievement! After archery we went back to our cabins to get ready for the outdoor cinema and dinner! For the movie we watched Space Jam, a film featuring Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes! It was pretty funny! After that we went back to our rooms and settled into for the night.
Thursday came and it was breakfast time then straight out to our first activity which was Mini Raft Building. Surprisingly, my group's raft won!! Then we had morning tea, after that we went to our second activity which was the Giant Swing! When it was my turn to go I was so nervous but I did it and it was amazing! After that it was lunch and we went to Crate Climb my partner was Maria we managed to get five crates but the record was seven. When afternoon tea was finished, we went canoeing and I was with Maria again! We played a game called canoe tag and a game called bad croc good croc they were both really fun!! The day was coming to an end time to get ready for dinner and Tribal Link. The dreamtime stories were very interesting and exciting to listen to by the fire after the stories we got to drink some homemade lemon myrtle tea, it was so good!
The final day of camp had arrived, we had Team Initiatives where we had to get across a pit of lava and find the golden pig! We all had to work as a team it was really fun! With everyone ready for some rest it was a quiet bus trip home.
Overall camp was a really good experience and I had a great time. I think I will remember Year 5 camp forever!
I chose Aboriginal justice as my topic. The Thursday before PYP Exhibition I wrote a song called Aboriginal Band. That day I was thinking about Aborigines a lot and I didn’t know where to put the emotion I felt. I’ve always known the best way to express myself is to write songs and sing. Knowing that, I jumped on the piano and put my soul into a heartfelt song.
This song is not only for Aborigines but it’s to spread awareness as well. It’s what I would call my apology on behalf of Australia. I am passionate about rights and I completely despise inequality. I am deeply committed to equal rights for Indigenous Australians. Let’s support the Indigenous together. Let’s strive for the Aboriginal Band.
“Robotics is so much fun, you get to create and then programme your creation. It is good to see how robots are changing our lives. We have built a colour sorter and we are looking forward to programming it further next term.”
Kenshin Tateno and Michael Narizhnaya 6L
“We have been building our robotic dog for five weeks. We have had so much fun building and we cannot wait to continue to programme our puppy called Rainbone. The dog has a colour sensor allowing it to bark, sniff and walk.”
Maria Narizhnaya 5G and Arya Denzongpa-Bathols 5P
“I am building a robotic tank. I love that you get to build lego and programme at the same time.”

The Open A team won their fourth consecutive premiership, the Open B and Open D also finished top of the ladder and the Year 7A team winning a premiership.
In the Junior School, Year 6A and 4A finished the season also unbeaten.
Our 1st Netball team headed to Trinity Lutheran College to play their final APS game for 2020. The previous week they won the Wallas-Bassingthwaighte Trophy against All Saints Anglican School, convincingly placing them top of the ladder. The team only had to win against Trinity to take their fourth consecutive APS premiership.
With their captain Amaris Toia out with a suspected ACL tear, the team got off to a cracking start with Year 9 student Marika Ransfield nicely filling the shooting position in Amaris’ absence. All players competed admirably with continued effort throughout, pushing the score out with ease.
The girls were too slick in every position, displaying their skills and proving they are the best team in the APS for 2020. The final score 61 to 14 to Somerset.
Congratulations team and all the best for State Vicki Wilson Cup in the holidays.
The Open B team finish at the top also, despite being a very disrupted season of Netball. The team arrived at Trinity Lutheran College eager to finish the season undefeated. Although there were many injuries in the lead-up to the game, the girls were fighting fit and ready for the challenge. The skills they had honed at practices paid off and each quarter saw the girls extend their lead from 13 to 3 at quarter time to 46 to 15 when the final siren sounded. Congratulations to the team for their determination, teamwork and sportsmanship – they were outstanding in the way they represented the College!
Congratulations to the Year 7A team for winning their first Senior School APS premiership. The team went through the season without a loss, and so did Trinity Lutheran College. Clearly both were exceptional teams. They had both dominated their games, each with a goal percentage over 400 per cent. So when the two teams met for the last game, it was essentially a grand final between two undefeated teams.
The Somerset 7A team was very professional in their approach. They started fast and hard – only slowing down if things got out of control!. The whole team worked well together, taking and giving hard, accurate passes. Playing fast made it easier to keep the timing consistent and they took an early lead over Trinity. They then steadily pulled away to win the final match 33 to 15. Each player was professional and highly skilled; as a team they played as one. This is a truly amazing team, and will be a core group for future Somerset netball success.
Thank you to Ms Jeffleas, our captain Daisy who with Marley and Rio made up our leadership team. Thank you too to our awesome defence team of Daisy, Steph, Milly and especially Claudine for stepping up when she was needed; to CC and Marley for their reliability in shooting and to Ava, Rio and Ariana for their attacking drive and versatility.
Thank you also to all –staff, parents, coaches and umpires - who have contributed to a professional approach to Somerset netball as well as the making of this awesome team!
Congratulations to all netballers for a successful season.
The South Coast teams had a clean sweep of all the team events winning the Boys 13 to 19 years, Girls 13 to 19 years event and the combined 10 to 12 years event.
In addition to that, Sarah had a great week - winning the individual girls’ title to become the Queensland Schools Golf State Champion 13 to 19 years. On the par 73 course she had rounds of 74, 75, 70 and 76 (with the 3 under par round of 70 being the women’s course record). Sarah started the final round 3 shots ahead of second place. In very challenging conditions with wind and torrential rain for the first 6 holes of the final round the leading girls both dropped shots early in the round but then made several birdies over the back 9. In the end Sarah won the championship by two shots.
David had a very solid week and had the equal best score of the day for his final round moving him into seventh place in the boys 10 to 12 years which resulted in his selection in the 10 to 12 years old Queensland Schools State team.
Justin unfortunately had to withdraw part way through his second round as the back injury that has kept him out of sport for the last few months flared up again making it impossible for him to continue.
Flynn Carter had a good week too. He came fourth in the boys 10 to 12 years and also got selected for the state team for the 10 to 12 years. Congratulations to all these golfers who represented South Coast and Somerset so well - best of luck for the State team at Nationals!
The U6s put in a valiant effort but came up short in the end 8-3.
Somerset Under 7 Blue VS Robina Orange What a massive victory for Somerset this weekend, with a massive score of 14 to 3. Robina tried very hard to block the Spartans and defend but our team was on fire. Mayuko scored a hat trick in the second half. Nothing could stop that girl.
Mayuko 4, Abhiveer 4, Jesse 3, Hamish 3, also bagging player of the week for being a terrific all-rounder. The victory would not have been possible without Emily and Liam passing the ball at the right time. Well done Under 7 Blue.
Under 7 Greens played against Robina Yellow at Robina’s home Common ground. Again, they had huge success! Coach Kydra instructed the players of their position rotating through the game. Knox, Jakub & Dylan all getting some outstanding goals. All the players understood their position and role, resulting in a strategy that worked very well and brought home a Win for our boys. Under 7 Greens won 4 v 1. Brayden earning the Player of the Week, with a very solid effort the whole game! Well done boys on a deserved win
Boys played extremely well in the game on 12/09/2020. Somerset U7 White secured a victory against Robina Green in the away game with a final score 6:5. Sion and Franklin both scored two goals. Louise and Oliver scored one goals each. Ruben, who had a solid defence and passing during the game, got the certificate of best player. It is also a reward for him to play a hat trick in the game last week.
Under 7 Orange played away against Robina Blue for round 10 of the series, the Spartans winning 5 to 2. Hunter scored the five goals earning a well-deserved player of the match.
It was all for one and one for all in what Coach Mark summed up as the under 8 Green team’s best game and win of the year so far Vs Nerang on Saturday morning. The home team opened their account first with a straight scoring goal through a maze of Somerset defence which only served to awake the Spartans into a combined, controlled team effort of premium positional play, passing, defence & attack. Ollie a deserved player of the match scoring multiple goals with both left and right feet, was backed up strongly by Max hitting the back of the net, Thomas, Izaak and Will strong in defence, Vaughan & Sehaj relentless covering both ends of the pitch and Edward giving the team full support from the sideline resting up a soon to be recovered striking foot . As the referee's whistle blew to end the day's play, the winning Green team’s 4 to 1 goal score line was a fitting result for such a great team effort.
This week we played an away game against Ormeau FC. The goal scoring was opened by Ormeau but Nash was able to strike back quickly securing his first goal of 6 for the game. Due to his amazing goal scoring and strong play throughout the game Nash was the worthy recipient of Player of the Week. Well Done Nash. Our boys showed great passing skills and crosses during the game and are really coming together well as a team. Jacob, Magnus and Josh continued to apply pressure throughout the game. Great talking amongst our boys on field resulting in great passes and fast forward play. Great persistence from Jacob and focus to score our 5th goal and an amazing solo run by Nicholas who held possession resulting in a goal - well deserved boys. Magnus, Josh & Jacob also supported defensively clearing the ball to prevent Ormeau from scoring. Our goalie Dash tried so hard as always to save all goals flying. Mark, Magnus’s dad had a cameo on the field chasing a stray ball and assisting Bailey at the same time. Nice play Mark. Our goals scorers were Nash (6), Bailey (3), Jacob (1), Daniel (2), Nicholas (1), Thanks must also go to Mark, Magnus’s dad for the end of game BBQ he set up for the boys. They really appreciated it and the sausages went down a treat at the end of the game. A really big thanks as always to Coach Daniel for leading our boys to a 14-5 win.

In the Senior School it was Jayden McLean who won the Trophy for the second year in a row. Last year Jayden played with Harry Mackintosh and this year he partnered up with Patrick Colville. Patrick and Jayden battled every week verse their mates from Years 7 and 8. Towards the end of the term, Phoenix Crampton and Rylan Kennedy came close but Jayden and Patrick stayed on top of the League.

Congratulations to Phoenix Crampton taking the Golden Boot with 10 goals. Great work Phoenix!
In the Junior School, Jacob Kelly, Nash Kennedy, Caspar Crampton, and Bailey Pourre represented Franklin in the Junior School. Students from Year 3 to Year 6 could participate in the Junior League.
