Congratulations to Staff Spartan of Week 5 Bronwyn Lee and Tracey Payne for their professionalism and dedication to APS Sport. We thank them for being efficient and proactive in the direction of our Spartans and other APS AFL student athletes last week.
Mako Inukai competed at the Rhythmic Gymnastics Queensland State Championships on Saturday 17 August on the Gold Coast.
Mako placed first overall winning the event with three gold medals for her rope, hoop and freehand routine as well as a silver medal in her clubs routine.
Mako now prepares for the National Clubs Carnival held on the Gold Coast in September 2019 where she will compete with gymnasts across Australia in a five-day event.
These outstanding results are a credit to Mako as she devotes up to 18 hours a week in training at the Elite Rhythmic Gymnastics Club.
Paxton Stewart was the Boy Champion at the Gold Coast Region Red Ball Tournament Circuit Event Sunday 18 August.
Thanks go to his coaches Luke and Lachie.
Well done Paxton.
The Spartans Under 9s couldn’t take a win over Musgrave, due to the physical difference between the teams. Players from the opposition were a few months older than our Spartans. Despite the physical set back, the team tried hard and played good at times. Next week during the presentation day, the players will take on their parents, a match we are very much looking forward to.
Due to absence from Coach Cooper, the team was instead coached by Coach Trent. The kids were ready to play under their new coach and had an easy win. Most impressively, players were more excited about assisting teammates with plays rather than making attempts to always score themselves.
These Spartans played well on Saturday. From scoring a couple of fast break early goals from the first whistle, the maintained momentum throughout the match. Mudgeeraba managed to score a couple, putting us on the back foot at times. On reflection, these plays could have been handled and defended better with focus and concentration.
The first half of the match ended at 2-all with a well-matched game. Somerset defended very well. The second half Palm Beach manage to score another two goals, resulting in a final score of 4 to 2. A good game overall and well played by both teams.
On Saturday August 24 we have home games and our Presentation Day. We have organised activities for all age groups before and after their game.
Please check the Football Club Schoolbox Page for more info.
Such performance opportunities aim to foster a sense of encouragement and enthusiasm in students, as they are provided with opportunities to receive feedback by highlight qualified adjudicators. Eisteddfods allow young performers to build their confidence and independence as they prepare works to perform for new audiences.
I have been delighted to hear from students who have competed individually in recent exams and eisteddfods. They can be very proud of their efforts as they strive to improve their knowledge and skills in music, dance and drama.
We wish all the students who are performing this weekend at the Somerset Festival of Young Performers the best of luck – we are so lucky to have such an amazing performance opportunity at our doorstep!
Please email me at mblack@somerset.qld.edu.au to share performing arts achievements and news within our Somerset community.
Somerset students Milla Jansen and Jorja Otto both won events in their age groups with Milla bringing home seven medals in total. Milla won the 12 years 200m Freestyle while Jorjo (14 years) won both the 50m and 100m Backstroke events.
The Somerset Swim Club had 31 swimmers qualify and compete across the weekend with many attending their first State Championship event. Coaches Ash and Chris were kept busy across the weekend and were suitably impressed with the Club’s overall results. Somerset Swim Club had two swimmers win events with Cameron Donovan (15 years) placing first in the 50km Breaststroke and Harrison Smith winning the boys 18 years 100m Breaststroke event. Somerset Swim Club also had six other swimmers win medals across the weekend. Well done to Ky Codd (17 years) bronze in the 100m IM, Bessie Dear (12 years) bronze in the 100m IM and silver in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke, Ciara Fay (13 years) bronze in the 200m Breaststroke, Tara Newton (13 years) silver in the 1500m Freestyle, Cooper Lynch (12 years) bronze in the 200m IM and Leon Shirayama (18 years) silver in both the 50m and 100 Butterfly as well as bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.
To support these great results, another nine Somerset Club members placed in the top ten within the State in their main events, with some only fractions of a second away from placing. Well done to Jaxson Brimble, Piper Asquith, Joshua Cimini, Sebastine Du Preez, CJ Licuanan, Ethan McCullough, Amy Newton, Isabell Sly and Charlie Steele.
