Starkey performed Heaven Can Wait, Laver, The Bible in 30 Minutes or Less, Veivers, Compass, Franklin, Did Someone Say Bingo?, and Andrews, Back to reality. After much deliberation, Starkey House was announced as the best Overall Play and Laver House won the Adjudicator’s Award for their ensemble work. Outstanding Actor awards were presented to Calvin Walther, Ella Stewart, Mitchell Wuth and Ella Kirk.
Thanks must go to the House Play Directors for their co-ordination of five entertaining, impressive pieces of theatre and their talented casts, who worked tirelessly this term. The passion, energy and commitment of Mrs Anna D’Arcy, Assistant Head of Department – Performing Arts is enviable and her support, advice and guidance made the Festival one to remember. The Technical Services Crew provided much appreciated assistance throughout the process also. Thank you to staff who assisted during the Festival, providing such wonderful encouragement to our actors.
Acknowledging the 30th anniversary of the Festival provided the opportunity for casts to reflect on why students embrace the Festival and all that it offers to our students. We eagerly await the 2021 productions!
Working together as a team, counting chairs at each table, writing invitations and introducing our bears-there was so much to do. We were lucky to be joined by so many family members for our special events. Mrs Bassingthwaighte and Ms Collie also joined us with their Teddy Bears for the celebration.
After a Teddy Bear story, some dancing with Mums and Dads, honey bear sandwiches and other yummy treats, it was time for the tired Teddy Bears to head home. So much fun!

What brings me 'Joy' in Week 6? Science Club activity!
Using a cardboard box, electrical wires, a soldering iron, a buzzer and a metal hanger we created a fun way to past time (and make a lot of noise). Soldering wires together and building a circuit was a new experience to many members but it was one that all of us 'Lab Rats' thoroughly enjoyed. Only one group was successful in fully completing their Buzz Wire course and many others came close.
The Lab Rats second meeting of the year was full of fun and laughter and was one that I know everyone loved. I encourage everyone to join us at our next meeting for an experience that will bring you joy.
There are so many landmarks in Australia, however very few of them are recognised for their cultural value, and it is important for children to understand the significance of landmarks such as the opera house and the Great Barrier Reef.
I chose to communicate this significance in the medium of a pop-up book. As a form of literature, the pop-up book is becoming less and less common, however I have always been intrigued by how paper engineers manage to fold 3D models into 2D ones. Using a combination of newly learnt techniques, I managed to create eight of my own original pop-ups which resembled natural and man-made landmarks in Australia. Additionally, children have more visually oriented learning, and so for the main focus of the book to be the pop-ups, it is more likely that children will be entertained.
Throughout my Project, I learnt quite a bit about how important Australian landmarks are myself. I have also acquired a considerable range of writing techniques and engineering techniques from the construction of the book. I have immensely enjoyed creating prototypes of my final designs, and playing around with the different shapes and angles used in paper engineering. However, I am most proud of my book, which I have now finished, complete with 8 fully functional and unique pop-ups.
All the captains who visited really enjoyed spending some time getting to know the cohort a bit better but it was very clear the captains needed to practise their table tennis, just a bit.
The Yr 7s have launched off to a busy start but as everything settles in, the future is looking bright. With the captains visiting, a lot of friends were made and many great moments were shared. The whole experience was a blast.
In the Red Ball, we had Benedict Thompson, Henry Pevy, Zhander Griffiths and Louis Hodge compete. The boys played some awesome tennis and were able to get fourth place out of the five teams, who had some exceptional players. Louis Hodge was able to take home the Sportsmanship Award. An awesome memory for his first tournament! Well done!
In the Orange Ball, Ling Rostas, Jack Pluss, Lucy Pluss and Paxton Ryan competed for Somerset. These students played some of the best tennis out of all the teams on the day, narrowly missing out on first place by one point. Once again, an amazing achievement for Somerset.
It was an amazing day filled with some awesome tennis and excellent weather. We’d like to thank all of the parents for making the time available to take their children to this event and also the coaches from KDV, XLR8 Tennis, KO Tennis and Platinum Tennis for assisting in scoring and assisting in the set up and pack up of the event!
We nominated four teams to play in the Futsal Titles. The Under 12 Girls, Under 14 Girls, Under 13 Boys and Under 16 Boys.
The Under 13 Boys kicked off first, versus Brisbane Bayside College. The boys took the win and built up confidence for the rest of the day. Their second game versus Genesis Christian College was difficult. The game ended in a draw. Round 3 and 4 were against the same opponent. The games ended in a win and a loss. The boys finished second in their group.
The Under 16 boys played their games versus Lowood High School, MacGregor High School, Westside Christian College and Genesis Christian College. The Boys had three wins and one loss, to end third in their group.
The Under 12 Girls and Under 14 Girls played in the same group versus Mount Alvernia College, Loganlea High School, and Stretton State College. Both teams were undefeated and ended as Number 1 and 2 in their group. The Under 12 girls qualified for the finals/ knockout stage, which will take place later this month.
Our Junior Futsal teams will play March 16, for the Junior Titles.

With so many outstanding performances achieved, the Spartan Athletics programme is on the rise. I am looking forward to continuing to build the programme with the fantastic support from student athletes, their parents and of course all our outstanding coaches. Thank you also to our Director of Sport, Candice McKenna for attending the meet and supporting our programme so well.
Overall, we collected eight Golds, four Silver and one Bronze medal with many national qualifying performances and Personal Bests. Outstanding results! The weather conditions were quite good for competing on the first two days of the meet, however by Saturday and Sunday the winds had escalated. The big headwinds for the sprints and blustery winds for the circular events certainly impeded many of the results. The jumpers and hurdlers also had to contend with sporadic winds, which played havoc with run ups and sighting the take-off positions.
Britney Ingr continues to amaze with her three Gold medals and always producing when it matters most. Prosper continues to dominate his age group and rises to the occasion at championship level. Felix is really starting to develop his massive potential and the results are showing. Stephanie, a newcomer to vaulting displayed composure and focus to claim her first ever state title. Jake Giltrap-Good continues to deliver PBs when it matters most and ran some very intelligent tactical races. Starr ran beautifully and I am sure will continue to improve in the lead up to Australian Track & Field Championships. Vivian continues to achieve excellent results in the walks and will be a force at the Australian competition. Alex Halloran, ran her heart out and produced a massive PB in her first state championships competition was a national qualifier and came an impressive third place, Bronze in the Steeplechase. Jake Iles has come from relative obscurity and keeps stepping up to the challenges in front of him, unlucky not to claim a medal, although PBs and national qualifiers are a sensational result. Jess Velloza competed under duress with a sore ankle but turned up and gave it her all finishing an excellent sixth place in the Final. There is lots of potential yet to be realised there. Kartier Marjanovic, qualified for the 200m final and finishing seventh displayed some of her potential we all know she has – well done everyone!
It was also fantastic to see some of our Somerset College alumni continuing to compete in the sport years after their student days at Somerset. Alex Beck, aiming for Olympic selection this year, won Gold in the Open Men’s 400m (46.29); Ryan Neale won Silver in the Open Mens 110mH; James Arnold placed ninth in the Open 800m. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone.
At the end of March (21 to 29) many of these athletes will be travelling to Sydney for the Australian Championships. If you see any of these students around, please wish them well. I will be updating their results after the competition. Good Luck to all of them!
Congratulations to Nathalie on her significant achievement.
