Sustainability - a College Approach

Sustainability is about meeting today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. At Somerset College, we are committed to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, empowering students to be active participants in creating a more sustainable future.

Through the Sustainable Spartans Committee, students have access to resources, initiatives, and hands-on opportunities that allow them to explore their passions and drive real change. Whether through conservation projects, waste reduction programs, or innovative sustainability solutions, our students are encouraged to think critically, act responsibly, and make a meaningful impact on our planet—ensuring a healthier, more sustainable world for generations to come.

At Somerset College, sustainability is more than just an idea—it’s a way of life. Our campus serves as a dynamic learning environment where students can trial and test sustainable practices that make a tangible impact. From creek and wildlife regeneration projects to renewable energy solutions, waste management initiatives, and innovative recycling strategies, we encourage hands-on learning that fosters environmental responsibility.

Sustainability is woven into the student experience at every level. Our youngest learners in Pre-Prep engage with Munch and Crunch worm farms, gaining an early appreciation for waste reduction and composting, while our Senior School students lead entrepreneurial projects focused on sustainable solutions. Through these experiences, students develop a deep understanding of their role as global citizens, empowered to inspire change within their communities and beyond.

As a College, we are committed to integrating sustainability into our infrastructure. We continue to install solar panels and environmentally friendly features in new buildings, reducing our carbon footprint and setting a precedent for responsible development.

Other key initiatives include our mini farm, which promotes sustainable agriculture and food production; water management programs that focus on conservation and responsible usage; and air quality monitoring to ensure a healthy learning environment for all.

At Somerset, we believe sustainability is a shared responsibility. By equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and passion to drive meaningful change, we are shaping a future where innovation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.

Breathing Easy: Air Quality Innovations

Clean air is essential for optimal learning, and Somerset College continues to lead the way in air quality management. Our live monitoring systems track carbon dioxide and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) in classrooms, ensuring a healthy and productive environment for students and staff.

To further enhance air quality, we are trialling active remediation techniques, responding immediately if sensors detect a rise in pollutants. This forward-thinking approach not only improves learning conditions but also helps minimise the spread of airborne illnesses.

Waste: Closing the Loop on Campus

Waste management is a significant cost for the College, but through education and action, we’re reducing landfill contributions and boosting our recycling efforts. The latest development? Direct composting!

Our new Year 3 Mini Farm project is set to receive a rotary composter. With the support of students, this initiative will transform organic waste from the College catering facilities into nutrient-rich compost. This initiative reduces waste and brings sustainability to life for students, who will eventually manage every stage of the composting cycle. It's a true circular economy in action!

This is supported by our student-led Sustainable Spartans, who engage their peers year-round and for special events like Clean Up Australia Day.

Cutting Carbon, One Panel at a Time

Somerset College is harnessing the power of the sun! Last year, we installed an additional 280kW of solar panels, significantly reducing our energy costs and carbon footprint. Students can even track live energy production data, creating real-world learning opportunities in maths and science.

We are also working with NABERS, Australia’s national environmental rating system, to identify the most impactful and cost-effective steps in our ongoing carbon reduction journey.

Water: Every Drop Counts

Our College is pioneering innovative ways to reduce water consumption. By blending harvested rainwater with the mains water supply, we produce organic fertiliser for our ovals. Looking ahead, we’re exploring ways to filter grey water and even repurpose waste chlorinated water from the pool—steps that could lead to significant savings on our water bills while championing sustainable water management.

Revitalising Wyangan Creek

Our commitment to environmental restoration continues with the revitalisation of Wyangan Creek, ensuring the return of native flora and fauna. Regular maintenance, weeding, and strategic replanting bring this important ecosystem back to life. With many opportunities for students to be involved, it is a great project for students to take practical action towards maintaining our environment.

We are also proud to collaborate with Watergum, an esteemed environmental charity, to enhance this project further. Their on-campus lab for cane toad eradication offers students an exciting hands-on learning opportunity, demonstrating conservation science right on their doorstep.

Be Part of the Solution!

Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and we welcome your ideas and feedback. Our goal is to provide students with opportunities to engage in practical sustainability initiatives that promote innovation and an appreciation of our local natural environment. This Clean Up Australia Day, we are reminded of the importance of protecting our environment and encourage everyone to take part—whether through small everyday actions or active involvement in local initiatives.
