This week we continue our APS Winter Sports Trials, which will run for three weeks in total before our first round versus All Saints.
Felix (Year 9) competed over the weekend at the Queensland State Athletic Championships in Long and High Jump at QSAC and won a silver medal in both events. He performed excellently on the day with PB’s achieved in both events.
As a result he will be travelling to Sydney in March to represent Queensland in the National Athletic Championships. As a result of his achievements in summer Athletic events, he has been selected for Queensland Athletics (QA) A Squad. As outlined by QA, "The A squad Australia's Top 8", has been established to recognise the very elite of Queensland talent. The standards have been set to reflect predicted "Top 8" performances nationally in the 2017-18 season.
Luke and Jack (Year 7) competed in the 2018 Annual Gold Coast Secondary Inter-School Challenge (Middle Years) Tennis Tournament held at Southport’s Queens Park on Sunday 25 February.
Somerset College entered two Doubles Teams including Luke Buker and Oliver Yang and competed against some tough competition from 20 school across the Gold Coast including TSS, Trinity, Palm Beach Curumbin, Benowa SHS, Nerang SHS, Miami SHS, Coomera Anglican, All Saints, Marymount and St Michael’s College.
Jack and Luke went through to the Quarter Final undefeated at 4-1, 4-0 and 4-2. They then played the Quarter Final against TSS which they won 4-0, then the Semi Final against Marymount 4-1 and finished the Finals of the day against Trinity winning 6-2.
This is the second consecutive year that Jack and Luke have represented Somerset College in this Doubles Team event. Putting Somerset College on the plaque last year in 2017 for the first time to win the 2017 Annual GC Primary Inter-School Challenge.

On Monday the Trials took place at Miami Pool. Results will be posted when available.
Hinterland Sports Trials
Hinterland Trials are for strong performers to trial for representative selection in school sport. These lead to Regional and State teams.
Students wanting to trial for these teams, must email or come to the Sports Department ASAP. All trials are listed on the Sports Page of Schoolbox (“Representative Sport” tile) and announced in Notices during the week.

House Cross Country Carnival, Wednesday 18 April:In Week 1 of Term Two, we will host our Annual House Cross Country Carnival. Students will leave class at the end of period four and head to the Track area to prepare for their races (16 Years+ Boys race 6km, all others race 3km). Awards will conclude at the Track by 4.45pm.

Student Injuries: If your son or daughter is injured at school sport, it must be recorded at the time by the school nurse/medical person present if parents wish to apply through the school insurance policy. If delayed signs or symptoms arise over the weekend, students must notify the school nurse on Monday morning.
