Somerset had over 30 swimmers competing at the Queensland State Short Course Championships with some outstanding performances. The event was held in Brisbane last weekend from Friday 16 August to Sunday 18 August.
Somerset students Milla Jansen and Jorja Otto both won events in their age groups with Milla bringing home seven medals in total. Milla won the 12 years 200m Freestyle while Jorjo (14 years) won both the 50m and 100m Backstroke events.
The Somerset Swim Club had 31 swimmers qualify and compete across the weekend with many attending their first State Championship event. Coaches Ash and Chris were kept busy across the weekend and were suitably impressed with the Club’s overall results. Somerset Swim Club had two swimmers win events with Cameron Donovan (15 years) placing first in the 50km Breaststroke and Harrison Smith winning the boys 18 years 100m Breaststroke event. Somerset Swim Club also had six other swimmers win medals across the weekend. Well done to Ky Codd (17 years) bronze in the 100m IM, Bessie Dear (12 years) bronze in the 100m IM and silver in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke, Ciara Fay (13 years) bronze in the 200m Breaststroke, Tara Newton (13 years) silver in the 1500m Freestyle, Cooper Lynch (12 years) bronze in the 200m IM and Leon Shirayama (18 years) silver in both the 50m and 100 Butterfly as well as bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.
To support these great results, another nine Somerset Club members placed in the top ten within the State in their main events, with some only fractions of a second away from placing. Well done to Jaxson Brimble, Piper Asquith, Joshua Cimini, Sebastine Du Preez, CJ Licuanan, Ethan McCullough, Amy Newton, Isabell Sly and Charlie Steele.
Swimming now changes focus towards the long course season with plenty of racing in the lead up to the Queensland State Championships in December. Somerset Swim Club will again be hosting its own long course meet at Somerset on Saturday 5 October.
